Petition to: To the Rt Hon Karen Bradley MP - Secretary for State for Culture - Media and Sport.

On February 25 the BBC quietly announced it had appointed a Muslim woman, Fatima Salaria, as its new Head of Religion.  This is the second, consecutive appointment of a Muslim as head of religious broadcasting.  Last year, following protest against Islamic bias demonstrated by Aaqil Ahmed, former Head of Religion and Ethics, the BBC announced it was abolishing both his role and a separate and independent department of religion.  Yet now the BBC has not only appointed a new Head of Religion, but has again appointed a Muslim.

It goes without saying that there is religious diversity in this country, and all faiths should receive proportionate coverage.   But Christianity remains the established faith of the UK, with 59.5% of the population identifying as Christian (https://faithsurvey.co.uk/uk-christianity.html).   Surely therefore it would seem right that the head of religious programming be Christian, and that all faiths should be respected, including Judaism, Hinduism and Sikkhism – as well as Islam.

As it is, the BBC’s appointment of yet another Muslim, once again calling for greater representation and coverage of Islam, appears deliberately insulting - to both Christianity and to other non-Islamic faiths represented in this country.   Indeed, the BBC appears complicit in an orchestrated attempt to Islamise the UK.  Such an attitude displays not just contempt, but is a betrayal of the principles and values on which the UK is founded.  We therefore call for an urgent investigation into the governance and policy of the BBC, and for review of the licence fee.

Sincerely,
