Homeschooling

Dear Secretary of Education John King,

Last week during a breakfast hosted by the Christian Science Monitor Secretary of Education, you said that parents are shortchanging their children by choosing to homeschool. You said that homeschooled students “aren’t getting the range of options that are good for all kids” and "that students who are homeschooled are not getting kind of the rapid instructional experience they would get in school."

Respectfully, I ask you to thoughtfully consider your position on homeschooling in light of the facts.

Over the last several decades, we have seen home-schooled graduates far outperform their publicly educated peers. In fact, home-schooled students in the United States far outperform public schooled students in standardized tests. On average, home-schooled students score in the in the 86th percentile across subjects. The average public schooled student scored at the 50th percentile across subjects.

In addition, home-schooled graduates have strong relationships with other home-schooled students—and more importantly, extremely strong relationships with family members.

In addition, the freedom to choose how to educate your children is a key aspect of religious liberty for parents.

I hope you will thoughtfully reconsider your position and not disparage homeschooling in the future.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]
