Tell Dove: Men Cannot Be "Real Moms"

Dove, a personal care brand owned by Unilever, just released a so-called “inclusive” Mother’s Day advertisement that includes a male to female “transgender” individual as an example of real motherhood.

Help us tell Dove that biological men cannot be mothers.

A mother is, by definition, a woman in relation to her child or children. By attempting to include biological men under this definition, Dove has devalued the importance of women in motherhood.

In the Dove commercial, Shea, a male-to-female “transgender” individual who is in a partnership with a woman, comments: “There’s no one right way to do it all.” Shea explains, “We are both his biological parents. You get people that are like, ‘What do you mean? You’re the mom?’ We’re like, ‘Yep. We’re both gonna be moms.’”

Unfortunately, this advertisement reflects a larger cultural shift away from valuing women in motherhood.

The British Medical Association recently urged medical personnel to refer to pregnant women as “pregnant people” instead of “expectant mothers” because the term “expectant mothers" may be offensive to transgender "men."

Will you help us tell Dove that we, their customers, do not buy into their ludicrous denial of reality? 

Mother’s Day is a time to celebrate women as mothers, not a time for political statements that many of their customers do not agree with. 

This Mother’s Day, help us celebrate and promote the value of women in motherhood.

Biological men cannot be "real moms"

Dear Paul Polman, Chief Executive Officer, Unilever Plc.,

I reject the notion that biological men can be “real moms.”

Attempts to redefine motherhood to include male-to-female transgender individuals devalue the importance of women in motherhood.

As a Dove customer, I do not buy into the denial of reality in your recent “Real Moms” ad campaign.

Mother’s Day is not a time for politicized statements that many of your customers do not agree with. Please issue a statement retracting this advertisement and reassuring your customers that you recognize the value of women in motherhood.
