Canada’s federal government has gone too far in their cruelty towards people who haven’t been vaccinated against COVID-19.

Employment Minister Carla Qualtrough has stated in an interview with the CBC that it’s her “current thinking” that Canadians who get laid off from their job or fired from their job because they haven’t been vaccinated against COVID-19 shouldn’t be able to access employment insurance (EI).

Though the public policies that Employment and Social Development Canada have around this haven’t been publicly specified, Qualtrough confirmed that right now she’s looking at and making sure that these people won’t qualify for EI.

This is in the wake of many situations in the last few months where both the government and private corporations in a wide range of sectors have laid off employees who haven’t been vaccinated against COVID-19, even in some sectors which aren’t particularly ‘high-risk’.

If Qualtrough and other officials at Employment and Social Services Canada go forward with their plan to deny EI to people who’ve lost their jobs for not being vaccinated, many Canadians could end up impoverished.

This issue goes beyond any personal opinions one might have regarding COVID-19 or vaccination. This is an issue of conscience rights and religious freedoms. If someone feels they ought not to take any of the COVID-19 vaccines Canada offers due to their religious denomination, due to the connection between most COVID-19 vaccines and HEK-293 (a cell line derived from an aborted fetus), or due to any other sincere and serious reason, they should not have to risk poverty to have this conscientious objection.

This should especially be true due to the fact that COVID-19 vaccine requirements were not in place when most people were hired to the jobs that now require them. The choice to disobey your conscience or religious beliefs under these circumstances is not making a “free choice” to not meet an employer’s condition for employment, at least in any honest use of the term. And because employees pay into EI in the first place, it’s cruel to not allow unvaccinated people to access it if they’ve been laid off or terminated under these conditions.

Please sign this petition to tell Employment Minister Carla Qualtrough that you do not support the federal government denying EI to Canadians who haven’t been vaccinated against COVID-19, and that they must not go forward with this policy.

Don't Deny Employment Insurance to Unvaccinated Canadians

Dear Employment Minister Carla Qualtrough,

I do not support the government denying employment insurance (EI) to Canadians who haven’t been vaccinated against COVID-19.

In a recent interview you had on CBC, you stated that it’s your “current thinking” that Canadians who get laid off from their job or fired from their job because they haven’t been vaccinated against COVID-19 should not be able to access employment insurance.

You also confirmed that as the Employment Minister at Employment and Social Development Canada, that you’re trying to make sure that unvaccinated Canadians won’t qualify for EI.

This is a severe violation of the conscience and religious freedoms of Canadians. If someone feels they should not take any of the COVID-19 vaccines that Canada currently offers due to serious and sincere reasons such as their religious denomination or due to the vaccine being tested on cell lines which derived from an aborted child (HEK-293), then they should not have to risk poverty to have this objection. And because employees pay into EI in the first place, it’s cruel to not allow unvaccinated people to access it if they’ve been laid off or terminated under these conditions.

You must ensure that it does not become the public policy of Employment and Social Services Canada to deny EI to Canadians who have serious and sincere objections to the currently-available COVID-19 vaccines.
