Royal Mail: Ensure eugenicist Marie Stopes stamp no longer valid for use

Recently there has been a lot of debate about controversial historical figures and their racist views. One name which has escaped that debate is Marie Stopes who held both racist and eugenicist views. Unfortunately Marie Stopes’ legacy lives on in the views of some who feel that some people should not be here. Because of Marie Stopes’ long shadow, the abortion provider which was named after her,  Marie Stopes International, announced last week that it has changed its name to MSI Reproductive Choices. It cited Marie Stopes’ support for eugenics and said many of her opinions are in stark contrast to its values and principles.

But the Royal Mail still holds her up as a champion for women and in 2008 put out a stamp in her name. The truth is that Marie Stopes thought that some women were “racially diseased” and “ depraved” and that their offspring would be “physically and mentally tainted”. We feel it is inappropriate for the Royal Mail to have stamps which glorify someone who held the repulsive and offensive views contained in the quotes below taken from her book, Radiant Motherhood which you can read by CLICKING HERE

“It is my prayer that I may live to see in the generation of my grandchildren a humanity from which almost all the most blackening and distressing elements have been eliminated”

“A second and almost greater danger is not a simple ignorance, but the inborn incapacity which lies in the vast and ever increasing stock of degenerate, feeble-minded and unbalanced who are now in our midst….”

“When Bills are passed to ensure the sterility of the hopelessly rotten and racially diseased, and to provide for the education of the childbearing woman so that she spaces her children healthily, our race will rapidly quell the stream of depraved, hopeless and wretched lives which are at present ever increasing in proportion in our midst”

“The miserable, the degenerate, the utterly wretched in body and mind, who when reproducing multiply the misery and evil of the world, would be the first to be thankful for the escape such legislation would offer from the wretchedness entailed not only on their offspring but on themselves.”

“The best, the thriftiest, the most serious-minded, the most desiring of parenthood are to-day those who are forced by circumstances into the position of the ancient slave and allowed to rear but one or two children…… While on the other hand, society allows the diseased, the racially negligent, the thriftless, the careless, the feebleminded, the very lowest and worst members of the community, to produce innumerable tens of thousands of stunted, warped, and inferior infants.”

The stamps are still valid for usage. Please therefore sign our petition asking Royal Mail to disassociate itself from Marie Stopes by ensuring the stamps are no longer valid for use and apologising for holding up someone who held racist and eugenic views, as a champion for women.

Petition to: Mr Stuart Simpson - CEO Royal Mail

Dear Mr Simpson,

Re: Withdraw Marie Stopes Stamp

Recently Marie Stopes International changed its name to MSI Reproductive Choices because of Marie Stopes’ support for eugenics. It said many of her opinions are in contrast to its values and principles. Given that Royal Mail proudly features Marie Stopes on one of its stamps, are her views not in contrast to the values and principles of the Royal Mail?

Marie Stopes held both racist and eugenicist views. She felt some women were “racially diseased” and “ depraved” and that their offspring would be “physically and mentally tainted”. When organisations like yours hold her up as a champion of women, it can give the impression that her repulsive views are acceptable. The quotes below are from her book Radiant Motherhood, a link to which is on our website HERE

While we understand that the stamp was published in 2008, it remains valid for usage in the UK. If you believe, as most people do, that Marie Stopes’ views above are offensive to women and unacceptable in today’s society, please demonstrate this by ensuring the stamp is no longer valid for usage in the UK. We also ask that the Royal Mail apologise for putting out a stamp championing Marie Stopes, given her racist and eugenic views.
