Call to Remove BMA Ethics "Expert" Who Backs Abortion if Child is "Wrong" Sex
Professor Wendy Savage, former abortionist and current member of the Medical Ethics Committee (MEC) for the British Medical Association (BMA), has recently stated her support for the abhorrent practice of sex-selective abortions. This is a deeply misogynistic procedure which overwhelmingly sees unborn girls killed for the crime of being girls.
A conservative estimate from the UN states that around 117 million women and girls are ‘missing’ from the expected population in Asia and Eastern Europe.
Professor Savage, having performed over 10,000 abortions in her career, is also an ethics “expert” who supports abortion up until birth.
Her comments have come as some NHS hospitals have begun refusing to tell parents the sex of their child due to evidence that there are fewer girls in Britain than one would statistically expect.
But Savage has dismissed as a ‘myth’ that sex selective abortions happen in Britain or that women would choose to undergo a ‘sex-selection’ abortion even if permitted to do so.
This is in spite of first-hand experience of many women who have been forced to have sex-selective abortions as recounted in a 2015 report from the Department of Health. The report contains several harrowing reports of violence and external pressure on women to have abortions because their child was a girl. One story recounts:
“[C] knew her husband was not happy and was angry as she was expecting another girl. She remembers him repeatedly punching and kicking her in the stomach and passing out, when she regained consciousness her husband had walked out and sent her divorce papers a couple of months later.”
Yet Savage has the gall to dismiss these painful experiences out of hand as a ‘myth’.
She said: ‘… some places won’t tell the woman the sex of the foetus, which is outrageous… If a woman does not want to have a foetus who is one sex or the other, forcing her [to go through with the pregnancy] is not going to be good for the eventual child, and it’s not going to be good for [the mother’s] mental health.’
Since doctors were filmed offering abortions on the basis on sex in 2012 the Department of Health have gone on to clarify that: ‘Abortion on the grounds of gender alone is illegal.’ So Savage is not only advancing a morally repugnant view but also an illegal one.
Importantly, Prof Savage is behind a bid, revealed by the Mail on Sunday, to convince BMA members to back a policy calling for abortion to be removed from criminal statute, submitting a successful motion at last year’s BMA conference seeking a policy on decriminalisation.
Given Prof Savage's abortion extremism, it is clear that she is advancing her own agenda and is not fit to remain on the BMA Medical Ethics Committee. Please sign this petition asking for her removal.
