In school boards all across Ontario, students are being asked to divulge their sexual interests and their gender identities.

On orders from the Ontario government, children in elementary school are being asked on a “Student Census” to choose whether they are a boy, girl, “gender fluid”, “gender nonconforming”, “non-binary”, “questioning”, “trans boy or man”, “trans girl or woman”, or “two-spirit”.

Additionally, in grade 7 and above, school boards start asking students if they are straight, lesbian, gay, bisexual, two-spirit, queer, questioning, asexual, pansexual, or “other”.

According to the Upper Grand District School Board’s website, the result of the Student Census is “confidential, but is not anonymous”. It is already inappropriate enough that adults are trying to get children to divulge information about their sexuality, but it should cause even more worry to parents everywhere that this information can be tied back to the student.

Links to these surveys are displayed on the front pages of many school board websites across Ontario, such as the Toronto District School Board, Durham District School Board, and even Catholic school boards like the Halton Catholic District School Board.

But even in schools where these surveys cannot be found as easily, you can guarantee that your children are being asked these questions. This is because schools in Ontario are required by Ontario’s Education Equity Action Plan and Anti-Racism Act, 2017 to gather and report this data.

That’s right - despite Doug Ford originally being voted in as Premier by parents who were concerned about Ontario’s sex-ed curriculum, it is ultimately Doug Ford’s government that is responsible for this radical idea to force your child’s school to ask your child to report their gender identity and sexual orientation.

As well, by forcing Ontario’s Catholic schools to participate in this, Doug Ford’s government is also making these schools contradict their own belief systems. By making these schools ask children if they were created “non-binary” or “two-spirit”, they are contradicting the Catholic belief that humans are made either male or female (see: section 2393 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church).

We must let kids be kids. By forcing radical gender ideology down young children’s throats by continuously asking them on the Student Census if they’re queer, pansexual, two-spirit, non-binary, our government is harming them irreparably.

Please sign this petition to demand that Stephen Lecce, Ontario’s Minister of Education, end the Student Census in Ontario and stop forcing schools to ask young children about their gender identity and sexual interests.

Petition to: Minister of Education Stephen Lecce

It has come to my attention that the Ontario government has been forcing schools to ask students to divulge their sexual interests and their gender identities through the Student Census. This non-anonymized Student Census has all schools in Ontario asking children to state whether they are gender fluid, gender nonconforming, non-binary, questioning, transgender, or two-spirit, as well as whether they’re straight, lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, questioning, asexual, or pansexual.

According to these school boards, they are required by Ontario’s Education Equity Action Plan and Anti-Racism Act, 2017 to gather and report this data.

It is harmful to be asking young children all across the province these questions, not just because it is in a non-anonymized format that could be abused, but because it is introducing a confusing and destructive gender ideology to these children at a young age.

Your government is completely destroying any trust that Ontario parents have in Ontario’s education system. Kids go to school to learn math and science, not to be compelled to say if they’re two-spirit or queer. As well, the Student Census forces Catholic schools to violate their own teachings on gender and sexuality.

Ontario’s government, specifically the Ministry of Education, must acknowledge the harm they’ve done to parents and students through the Student Census, and cease to collect this information.
