A new play based on the life of French heroine and Catholic Saint Joan of Arc is opening at London’s world-famous Globe theatre, which depicts this legendary woman as ‘non-binary’, complete with they/them pronouns!

This woke nonsense not only insults women but also gratuitously offends Catholics. Saint Joan is revered by millions of the faithful across the world as a symbol of chastity and courageous feminity who sacrificed her life in pursuit of truth.

As historical documents of the time attest, Joan of Arc was a biological woman who was not made uncomfortable by her sex. It is a gross affront to her memory and to the dignity of women to rewrite her as a man or claim that her sex was ambiguous.

The playwright, Charlie Josephine, describes herself as a ‘non-binary’ person who has ‘failed at womanhood’, and she appears to be projecting her own issues onto this great woman.

It is incredibly sexist to claim that because Joan of Arc wore men’s clothing and did not conform to fifteenth-century expectations for a woman, she was secretly a man or conflicted about her identity. Is the Globe seriously saying that strong and courageous women have never really existed?

Would the Globe theatre dare to offend any other section of the population like this? If Islam’s cultural figures were depicted as non-binary with they/them pronouns, there would be a righteous uproar over such religious appropriation and historical revisionism. Why does a Catholic-French heroine deserve any less respect?

If Saint Joan were here today, she would despise this new play that makes a mockery of both her sex and her deep religious conviction. The life of Saint Joan is a story of courage, heroism and a woman who received a religious vocation directly from God, as indeed had many women before her.

The Globe should stop insulting women!

To the trustees of the Globe Theatre,

The forthcoming production about the life of Joan of Arc, Catholic Saint and patron saint of France, is an insult to her memory and to every single great woman in history.

Historical sources attest that Saint Joan of Arc was a faithful Catholic as well as a woman. Portraying Saint Joan as ‘non-binary’ with gender-neutral pronouns is a gross violation of her female dignity. There is absolutely nothing about Saint Joan’s life which would suggest that she was in any way conflicted about her biological sex; she was unequivocal that she was a biological woman. As a devout Catholic, Joan’s life should not be subject to retrospective ‘queering’.

To add insult to injury, your website has published an essay appropriating several other strong women in history, such as Elizabeth, using gender-neutral pronouns to describe them and suggesting their femininity was in doubt.

The Globe is endorsing the message that great women in history were not women, after all!

The public deserves better than this revisionist rubbish that attempts to deceive and politically indoctrinate audiences. Scrap this production and replace it with one that acknowledges the truth about Saint Joan.
