An Post: Withdraw stamp of Che Guevara now!
An Post, Ireland's state-owned and operated postal service provider, have, just this week, issued a stamp bearing the image of Ernesto Guevara de la Serna, otherwise known as Marxist revolutionary, Che Guevara.
The stamps, which are available in Ireland's main post offices, bear the well-known, romanticised image of Guevara.
The image which is based on the work of Irish artist, Jim Fitzpatrick, is in distinct contrast to the image (used in this petition) of the Guevara who was captured in Bolivia, after attempting to foment a revolution there, in 1967.
What the staff at An Post and the Department of Communications seem to fail to understand is that by putting Che Guevara on a stamp, they are tacitly supporting both Marxist political ideology and the use of violence to achieve an ideological end.
And, no amount of gainsaying it will make it any less worse.
Would An Post honour the birth of Franco, let's say, with a stamp, marking the 100th anniversary of his birth in 2015? Of course, not. But, the question must be asked: Why 'no' to Franco, and why 'yes' Che Guevara?
Is it because An Post supports a particular brand of politics?
Stated plainly, An Post - an arm of the Irish State (and, therefore, the Irish State, by proxy) - should not be promoting a political ideology, let alone a violent political ideology.
To do so, with public funding, is inexusable, and this stamp should be withdrawn immediately!
Not satisfied with his bloody assault on the establishment in Cuba during the 1950's, Guevara, in true revolutionary mode, moved on to the Congo and to Bolivia, seeking to foment revolution in those countries. And, Guevara was not even from Cuba!!
This is what Guevara had to say about the type of civic "character" required to provoke a revolution:
"To send men to the firing squad, judicial proof is unnecessary. These procedures are an archaic bourgeois detail. Hatred as an element of struggle; unbending hatred for the enemy, which pushes a human being beyond his natural limitations, making him into an effective, violent, selective, and cold-blooded killing machine. This is what our soldiers must become."
For the reasons above, and also because we believe that this action will hurt Irish interests abroad, this petition - directed to the Minister for Communications and the CEO of An Post, and Cce'ed to the US Secretary of State and the President of the Orlando Cuban Society Club - demands that An Post withdraw the 'Che' stamp with immediate effect.
Thank you for signing this petition!
