Let's face it, Canadians were duped when they were asked, back in mid-March 2020, to give up their civil liberties for a few weeks to "flatten" the Covid-19 "curve".  The idea was to social distance (but not wear masks) and give up on "non-essential" work and travel to keep hospitals from being overrun. This initial "lockdown" was not effective as, some 10 months later, we find ourselves in the midst of a second as cases rise and draconian restrictions are re-imposed on a weary public.

Problem is, rather than ask why the first "lockdown" failed and charting a more effective course, the powers-that-be decided we didn't lock down enough. It was everyday citizens who had failed to take the situation seriously and it was their stubborn insistence on socializing with friends and loved ones that was the problem. Even as they suffered through job losses and the deprivations associated with isolation. The gall!

Nevermind those who observed that the virus was just doing what viruses do and was re-emerging in the colder months as is the norm for such things in northern climes. Nevermind that many reports and authoritative studies posited the possibility that therapeutic-based treatments, even on an out patient basis, could flatten that curve and keep folks out of the hospital let alone ICUs. And nevermind that the only research that supported the "lockdown" mantra was born from a high school science project.

The only answer was to crush and "eradicate" the virus. And that could only be done by crushing the civil liberties of those responsible for spreading it. We do not have a problem that requires the mitigation of a virus and learning how to live with it as in days past with other respiratory contagions - we have a people problem that requires controlling the activities of the healthy along with the sick. We need coersion and the power of the State to make people comply!

The end result is as predictable as the rising sun in the east, Canadian civil liberties need to be trounced. Young men need to be tasered if they dare play shinny on an outdoor rink and families need to be ratted on if they have friends over for a meal. It matters not that these Stasi tactics incur more harm than good as noted by several credible sources. The police need to be re-directed from their serve and protect responsibilities to crack down with taser, club and mounted operations.

The tyranny has become so obvious and uncomfortable that the police are now starting to balk. Some have even begun a group, "Police on Guard for Thee", to challenge the anti-Charter approach to fighting Covid-19 and demand to see the evidence and logic that supports such an approach. By signing this petition you are going on record as supporting their push for transparency and a reasoned response to Covid-19. An approach that treats our Charter Rights and Freedoms as a priority that cannot be summarily dismissed by an overreaching government.

Petition to: Bryan Larkin - President of the Canadian Association of Police Chiefs and Brenda Lucki - Commissioner of the RCMP

As a citizen concerned with the advent of Covid-19 in Canada and its adverse impact on the fundamental Charter Rights and Freedoms of its citizens, I implore you to consider the part that the police forces you represent are playing in relieving Canadians of their right to speech, religion, conscience, association, assembly, mobility and security of the person in accordance with the fundamental principles of justice.

At the start of the virus emergency in mid-March of 2020, we were told to sacrfice these freedoms for a short few weeks until authorities could "flatten the curve" and give our medical services the time required to ramp up and better deal with the virus. A few weeks has become 10 months and we now find ouselves in a second "lockdown" that is decimating the rights of individual Canadians with no seeming effect on the contagion. Case counts keep rising even as young men are taken down with Calgary Police Service tasers for playing shinny on an outdoor rink and family homes are invaded by Quebec police for having six persons, rather than a maximum of five, during a household gathering.

These concerning developments, and many more like them, have spurred a group of active and retired police officers to form the group "Police on Guard for Thee" and demand formal justification for the unleashing of such force on the public. The group worries that Charter Rights are being abrogated in an "arbitrary" fashion and it further demands that law enforcement and judicial system authorities comment on the legality of such forceful measures. Indeed, they call for a moratorium on such intervetions with the public until such advice is forthcoming.

Please know that I support "Police on Guard for Thee" fully in their demands and share their concerns that Canadian Rights and Freedoms are being abused unreasonably. The evidence for "lockdowns" as a Covid-19 remedy currently lack any data-based, scientific justification and seem to be supported solely by modelling of a questionable nature. Such modelling includes that used by the Supreme Court of NL in the case, "Taylor v Newfoundland and Labrador", which was based on wildly exaggerated Infection Fatality Rates. Other modelling disasters include Neil Ferguson's Imperial College projections that panicked the Western world into its first lockdown and which were subsequently retracted as grossly overstated.

In truth, serious scientific studies indicate that the Covid-19 virus is not mitigated by "lockdown" strategies and related strong arm police tactics. These include an authoritative Danish study that revealed that those who wore cloth, medical masks were just as likely to catch the contagion as those who did not. Additionally, another very comprehensive study of millions of test cases in Wuhan province showed that the asymptomatic were extremely unlikely to spread the virus to others.

Given healthy people who don't wear masks, "Police on Guard for Thee" have a point in wanting further guidance before they taser them and break down their doors. As they say, they have taken an oath to the Charter that they are compelled to honour. I know that you feel the same way and will help them gain the information they need to serve and protect rather than taser and club. Please use your considerable influence to intervene and shed light on the constitutionality of a Covid-19 fight that sees police punishing, rather than serving, the public.
