Petition to: US Senate
US Senate: Exclude Abortion Funding from 2022 Spending
US Senate: Exclude Abortion Funding from 2022 Spending
UPDATE: This petition has been modified to reflect that Congress has passed the spending bill. The bill has moved onto the Senate.
On July 28, in a 2015-207 vote, U.S. Congress passed its spending bill for 2022 without including prohibitions on taxpayer-funded abortions. We need to support our senators who stand by the Hyde Amendment, which forbids the U.S. government from using our tax dollars to kill babies in the womb.
The Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies (LHHS) appropriations bill, which provides funding for 40 percent of federal agencies and programs, currently does not include the Hyde Amendment for the first time since the amendment’s implementation in 1976. The legislation has also removed the Weldon Amendment, which provides conscience protections for healthcare workers.
We must tell our senators that including taxpayer-funded abortions in the appropriations bill violates the trust of the American people in their federal government. U.S. Rep. Kay Granger, a pro-life Republican from Texas, is right in saying this spending bill is “out of step with the views of most Americans”.
A Marist survey shows that in January 2018, 64 percent of Americans opposed using tax dollars to pay for a woman’s abortion.
We must act now to convince our senators to do whatever is necessary to prevent our money from being used to kill unborn babies.
It’s up to us, the American people, to stop this appropriations bill from providing taxpayer-funded abortions. Contact your senator today and request that the Hyde Amendment and the Weldon Amendment be included in the LHHS appropriations bill. By signing the petition, you are letting the Senate know that you are deeply concerned about the 2022 spending bill.
The bipartisan Hyde Amendment that had been in place for decades is credited for saving 2.4 million babies from abortion, according to the Charlotte Lozier Institute.
If this spending bill for the 2022 fiscal year passes in the Senate, there will be nothing preventing the funding of abortions in Medicaid and elective abortions will become more common.
