In Iran, practicing Christianity is a criminal offense punishable by death. The Iranian Christian population is facing extreme persecution, often charged under the invented penalties of ‘spreading corruption on earth' or ‘enmity against God.’

When Hassan Rouhani became President of Iran, the mainstream media advertised him as a “moderate cleric” who would advance Iran’s relationship with the growing Iranian Christian population and Western countries. In their eyes he was a proponent of change.

However, the media proclaimed title of “moderate” has proven to be completely inaccurate. Rouhani, an extremist, is responsible violating the basic human right of religious freedom countless times. The Christian telegraph wrote: “President Rouhani's slogan in his presidential campaign was "Prudence of Hope", while in practice his government has proven to be a government of "Threat and Fear" for Christians.”

Just last week, three leaders in the Iranian Christian community were charged by authorities for their faith and expect to face a death sentence. All three men are well known and respected leaders within the Church of Iran.

Two years ago, an American citizen, Pastor Saeed Abedini, traveled to Iran for the purpose to help build an orphanage. Soon thereafter, he was arrested and imprisoned. His crime? Being a Christian.

Pastor Saeed converted to Christianity from Islam. The Iranian government claims that Pastor Saeed is a national security risk and in prior visits to Iran started home churches and worked with Iranian teens in converting them to Christianity.

In early 2013, Pastor Saeed was sentenced to serve 8 years in an Iranian jail. Soon thereafter, was moved to Iran’s toughest prison, Rajai Shahr. Experts say that the prison is overcrowded, deadly and inhumane. If Pastor Saeed is not released, this move will be a death sentence.

In January, the United Nations issued a statement saying they were alarmed by the increase in executions under President Hassan Rouhani, who came to power in August 2013. From January to June there were 411 executions recorded for various reason under Iran’s Sharia Law. This should not come as a surprise as the leader of the Islamic Supreme Council declared that Westerners (Christians) "are a bunch of animals." The Ayatollah believes that Christians are "mentally ill" and must "prescribe" the only cure: death.

It is time the medieval style of politics that Iran uses comes to an end. The style of politics that puts Christians to death for violating fictitious crimes. Under International Law, the basic rights of religious minorities are protected. In Iran, despite false propaganda campaigns that would make you think otherwise, rights of Christians to practice their faith are not protected.
