Action must be taken against the re-ocurring soot that blankets Port-Harcourt!

The soot -which is infused with the air we breathe-  is believed to cause chronic respiratory conditions, various forms of cancer and infertility in women. Research has shown that it is as a result of incomplete combustion of hydrocarbons, asphalt processing and illegal artisanal refinery operations. This petition, with the help of numerous signatures required, seeks to draw the attention of the Federal Government of Nigeria to this national crisis that negatively affects the lives of nearly 6 million individuals who reside in Port-Harcourt.

Petition to: The Federal Government of Nigeria (Ministry of Environment)

Every human being is entitled to a fundamental right to breathe clean air. However, many Nigerians have had to live with the actuality of environmental pollution, especially the residents of the Niger-Delta region of Nigeria. Since November 2016, residents of Port Harcourt, Rivers state have been confronted with a new calibre of menace: rising carbonaceous particles in the air - leaving soot residue on surfaces in and out of our homes.

Inhabitants are now exposed to health perils -coronary heart disease, asthma, bronchitis, respiratory illnesses, cancer and even premature death- that may eventuate from continuous inhalation of the hazardous substance.

The distressing issue is the fact that the government is not serious about this environmental problem. It is indeed woeful that the Ministry of Environment of Rivers state with complete awareness and cognizance of the matter at hand has onstensibly chosen to ignore the plight of its people.

We the residents therefore demand that the Federal government immediately bring the soot pollution to its table and take neccesary measures to combat this problem so as to prevent a forseeable outbreak of terminal diseases in the city of Port-Harcourt.

Sincerely,
