The UN is coming after your religious freedom!

Tell UN leadership to reign in their bureaucrats.

A United Nations Special Rapporteur – a French word for “reporter” – has written a UN report that takes to task traditional religious beliefs and values regarding life, marriage and biological sex.

In his report, the Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief, Mr. Ahmed Shaheed, has chosen to pursue a controversial agenda that includes abortion and LGBT+ rights that are out of step with the convictions of law-abiding and non-violent religions and religious adherents. In doing so, he accuses religious institutions and religious adherents of discrimination.

Emilie Kao of The Heritage Foundation writes:

“[T]he report shockingly conflates conservative religious beliefs about life, marriage, and biological sex with religious justifications for abhorrent human rights violations.

Many women, as well as men, hold conservative religious beliefs, but the report treats their freedom to live according to these beliefs as secondary to abortion and new claims to rights based on sexual orientation and gender identity. No international treaty recognizes a right to abortion, but the report simply asserts that one exists and that it trumps a medical provider’s right to conscientious objection.

The report goes so far as to suggest an expanded role for the state in doctrinal matters if a religious institution has “harmful discriminatory gender norms.” It goes as far as to criticize religious believers in Africa who oppose introducing school books that promote homosexuality.”

Mr. Shaheed is recommending state intervention in matters of religious doctrine, curtailing rights of conscience, and accusing conservative religions and adherents of human rights abuse. Let that sink in for a minute…

In other words, this rapporteur is telling the world that beliefs like yours have no place in polite company – let alone in the public square! The sad irony is Special Rapporteur Ahmed Shaheed is injuring the very people and institutions and liberty which he is mandated to protect!

At a time when 80 percent of the global population is facing high restrictions on religious freedom, the UN is giving time – and a microphone - to a man working to undermine Freedom of Religion or Belief even further.

Tell the UN to rein in their bureaucrats and stop undermining your religious freedom by signing the petition!

And don't stop there.  Notify your government representatives of this dangerous attack on religious freedom and national sovereignty.

Petition to: H.E. Elisabeth TICHY-FISSLBERGER - President of the Human Rights Council

cc: H.E. Antonio Guterres - Secretary General of the United Nations

I am concerned about the February 2020 report submitted to the Human Rights Council by Mr. Ahmed Shaheed, Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief.

Mr. Shaheed’s mandate is to promote the right to freedom of religion or belief, a fundamental right recognized in the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Article 18:

"Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion…to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance."

Rather than focus on internationally recognized violations of religious freedom, the Special Rapporteur has chosen to promote the controversial policy goals of UN human rights committees regarding abortion as well as sexual orientation and gender identity.

The Special Rapporteur accuses people of faith of discrimination if they oppose: abortion, the redefinition of marriage, and the dismantling of biologically immutable sex and gender distinctions between males and females. He does this through a tortured interpretation of gender and gender equality.

As a person of faith, it is difficult to reconcile that a person tasked with protecting my religious freedom would actually be undermining it. I ask that you rein in Mr. Shaheed and all other rapporteurs who are intent on overstepping their mandates.

Furthermore, I call upon Secretary General Guterres to institute a mechanism whereby member states, agencies, and civil society can register concerns regarding conflict of interest, political bias, groups associated with, and unethical practices on the part of special rapporteurs and HRC members, and ensure that they will be held accountable and action will be taken.

My human rights matter, too.
