This is a story that is becoming all-too-familiar, and unless we act now, it will only become more common. A highly-decorated Christian chaplain in the U.S. Navy has been suspended for providing Biblically-based counseling on sexuality in his private sessions.

Lt. Commander Wes Modder was accused of failing “to show tolerance and respect” in private counseling sessions regarding issues pertaining to faith, marriage and sexuality, specifically homosexuality and pre-marital sex.

Now, Chaplain Modder is being punished for his faith, having been relieved of his duties and told to clean our his desk, after the Navy found him unable to “function in the diverse and pluralistic environment.”

The 19-year military veteran has a record full of praise and commendations, but he could lose the benefits he has accumulated during his tenure serving his country, if his employment with the U.S. Navy is terminated before he completes 20 years of service.

A junior officer, who had been working with Modder for only a month, apparently bombarded him with questions about homosexuality, while Modder had no idea that he was homosexual and involved in a homosexual “marriage” to another man.

The junior officer rifled through private counseling sessions that Chaplain Modder had conducted with other servicemembers, and discovered "that during private, one-on-one pastoral care and counseling sessions, [Chaplain Modder] expressed his sincerely held religious belief that: sexual acts outside of marriage are contrary to Biblical teaching; and homosexual behavior is contrary to Biblical teaching; and homosexual orientation or temptation, as distinct from conduct, is not sin.”

Chaplain Modder was presented with a 5-page complaint from the junior officer and two "equal opportunity representatives" and was immediately relieved of his duties, with no opportunity to defend himself.

We need to stand with Lt. Commander Modder as he faces persecution for his religious beliefs, and for teaching the Biblical position on sexual ethics. We cannot allow this inquisition against Christian morality go unchallenged!

Join me in signing this petition, which will send an email to the U.S. Navy, asking them to restore Chaplain Modder to his post!

Respect Religious Freedom for Chaplains!

I am deeply troubled by your removal of Lt. Commander Wes Modder from his post. This highly decorated chaplain has been described as the "best of the best" and recommended for promotion. His 19-year history of service to this country is exemplary.

The U.S. Navy should respect his competence to counsel servicemembers in his capacity as a chaplain in accordance with his Christian faith. Rather than imposing a specific socio-political view on sexual morality upon chaplains, the U.S. Navy should afford individuals like Lt. Commander Modder room to exercise his religious freedom and advise servicemembers based on his best judgment during counseling sessions.

Please restore Lt. Commander Modder to his position and dismiss the trumped-up ethics inquiry against him.

Thank you!
