Romania's Constitutional Court has declared valid a Citizens' Inititative which would definitively define marriage, in the Romanian Constitution, as between one man and one woman.

The Citizens' Initiative, which gained an overwhelming 3M+ voters' signatures (out of a total population of just 20M), proposes to alter Article 48.1 of the Romanian Constitution, which deals with foundation of a family and family life.

Currently, the Article says: "The family is founded on the freely consented marriage of the spouses, their full equality, as well as the right and duty of the parents to ensure the upbringing, education and instruction of their children."

The proposal will simply replace the word "spouses", with a specific reference to a man and a woman.

This is not complicated.

And, now that the Constitutional Court has unanimously ruled that the proposal is constitutionally valid, it will now go to the Romanian Parliament. Their job is to give official approval to the measure and prepare the way for referendum on the matter. However, the proposal must first be approved by a three-quarters majority vote in both Houses of Parliament (i.e., the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate).

It is, therefore, the intention of this petition to accomplish two goals:

1) To THANK the Romanian Constitutional Court for simply doing their job and not erecting obstacles to this Citizens' Initiative proposal; and,

2) To ENCOURAGE Romania's Parliamentarians, both MPs and Senators, to fulfill the obvious will of the people and pass a measure to ensure that a referendum will be held on this most important of matters.

Romanian people want to protect the natural family, and Parliament should acknowledge the wisdom of the people on this issue.

As this petition is meant to encourage, anyone can sign this petition no matter where they live.

Perhaps, if Romania can succeed in protecting marriage and the natural family, other countries in Europe will follow their lead.

Thank you for signing!

Romanian Parliament should now give Romanian Citizens a referendum to define marriage as between one man and one woman

For the Kind Attention of the Following Government Officials in Romania:

  • Justices of Romania's Constitutional Court,
  • The Prime Minister, Hon Dacian Cioloș,
  • The President of the Deputies' Chamber, Hon Florin Iordache,
  • The President of the Romanian Senate, Hon Călin Constantin Anton Popescu-Tăriceanu

This petition has one very simple goal: to protect and defend marriage as between one man and one woman, which is the foundation of the natural family.

And, we, the undersigned, are going to achieve this goal by doing two things: First, we wish to thank the Justices of the Constitutional Court for unanimously ruling that the Citizens' Initiative, to define marriage as only between one man and one woman in the Romanian Constitution, is valid.

Over 3M Romanian citizens validly signed the initiative, and, now, with the Constitutional Court's approval, the initiative will go to the Romanian Parliament.

And, that is why the second thing we want to do with this petition is encourage you, the Romanian Parliament, as represented by the Prime Minister as well as the Presidents of both the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate - to give form to this Citizens' Initiative, in a popular referendum.

The proposal of the Citizens' Initiative is not complicated, as it simply changes the word "spouses" (in Art. 48.1, on the Family) to a specific reference of one man and one woman. Of course, that meaning is what the writers of the Constitution originally intended, and, moreover, it is clear that this definition has overwhelming public support.

After Summer recess, therefore, it is now time for Romanian MPs and Senators to actually do the bidding of the people who elected them to office. You must achieve a three-quarters majority vote in both Houses, but, it is clear from the massive collection of signatures, the Romanian people want this safeguard put into their Constitution.

This is democracy in action.

Thank you for your consideration and thank you for helping to protect the natural family by giving this referendum to the people.
