Canada’s Controversial Bill 28 Removes “Mother” and “Father”
UPDATE 11/29/16: Terrible news. The legislature approved Bill 28 today by a vote of 79-0. The Conservative leader actually demanded that all of his MPPs either vote for the bill, or absent themselves from the Legislature. That is unacceptable. We will continue to fight against this horrible policy, but in the meantime, please help us try to defeat Bill C-16, which is even more radical! You can sign that petition here.
A new bill, introduced in Ontario on September 29th, subjugates the natural family to the transgender agenda. The bill—misleadingly called the “All Families Are Equal Act”—is moving extremely fast. We must act now to stop this bill from passing into law.
According to Real Women of Canada, Bill 28 “turns on its head the former understanding of ‘family’ which consisted of individuals united by marriage, blood and adoption.”
The bill, which is currently being heard by the Standing Committee on Social Policy, is fraught with problematic language. The bill would remove the words “mother” and “father” from Ontario law, preferring instead the vague terms “birth parent” and “parent.”
Furthermore, “Bill 28 provides among its provisions that a child may have four parents, allowing a partner of the same-sex couple who has no blood ties with the child to become the parent of the child automatically, without adoption; sperm donors (fathers) are no longer deemed to be a parent of the child conceived; apart from a surrogacy agreement, there is no reference to the relationship of an ovum donor (the mother) to the child; and ‘mother’, ‘father’, are no longer mentioned on birth certificates.”
Charles McVety, of Canada Christian College, correctly points out, “The premier (Kathleen Wynne) is re-engineering the family . . . She removes ‘mother’ 17 times. Removes ‘father’ 23 times. The Act is amended by striking out the ‘mother’ and substituting it with ‘birth parent’ and ‘father’ with the word ‘parent.’”
Bill 28 also supports and ingrains the practice of surrogacy. The practice of surrogacy is offensive to human dignity and robs children of a natural family. It should be reconsidered in Canada, as we argued in a petition last week, not further ingrained in Canadian law.
Wynne’s spokesperson told reporters that the bill merely “updates legal wording to comply with today’s norms.”
If today’s “norms” include four parent families and the subjugation of mothers and father, then the norms should be updated… not the law. If you agree, please sign this petition now!
