Universities Must Protect Freedom of Speech

Dear Sir Jim McDonald, Chancellor and Vice Principal of the University of Strathclyde Glasgow,

I am writing to draw your attention to a current trend in many universities across the UK. The free exchange of ideas and discussion are being supressed at universities and sadly, Strathclyde appears to be no exception.

In the past few months, an aspiring ‘Pro-life’ Society at the University of Strathclyde has attempted to start up and has been effectively banned from doing so. This is a clear censoring and restricting of the freedom of speech of a large body of students who happen to dissent from the majority opinion.

Similar moves by the student union have been attempted in other universities such as Oxford and Cardiff, and eminent speakers such as Germaine Greer and Peter Tatchell have also faced censorship.

Freedom of speech must prevail in Strathclyde and I trust that you will have the courage to protect and promote this central aspect of university learning. I am sure that many alumni have benefitted from freedom of speech at university in years gone by. I am sure they will be less than impressed by the current censorious union which is surely causing some students to miss out.

I urge you to intervene in this and similar matters, ensuring that these students are permitted to form a society and speak about those topics which concern them most.
