Pharmacists forced to provide abortifacients or pay $1,000
Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA) and Cory Booker (D-NJ) have recently introduced legislation in the U.S. Senate to force private pharmacists to provide birth control and abortifacients, even if it violates their religious convictions. The proposed fine would be $1,000 per day for any pharmacy violating this statute.
This legislation has been assigned to the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions. Please sign this petition and urge the committee to reject this legislation as a violation of religious liberty and freedom of conscience.
The “Access to Birth Control Act” (S. 2960) would require pharmacists to provide “any drug or device approved by the [FDA] to prevent pregnancy … without delay.” The bill explicitly states that emergency contraception, such as Plan B or Ella, would be included in the law. Both Plan B and Ella prevent a fertilized egg from implanting in the uterus.
It is crucial to sign this petition now. In addition to sending a message to the committee, we will use the weight of your signatures to lobby Senate republicans to protect freedom of religion.
During an election year, some politicians that might favor protecting freedom of conscience will cave to the left to get more votes. We need to demonstrate now that the voice for religious liberty is strong and potent. Please help us open channels of communication of with flip-flop republicans!
Under S. 2960, pharmacists who decline to provide abortifacients would be fined $1,000 per day until the prescription is filled, or up to $100,000 “for all violations adjudicated in a single proceeding.” The legislation specifically states that Religious Freedom Restoration Act would not protect pharmacists in this case.
Two years ago, David and Barbara Green, owners of the arts and crafts store Hobby Lobby, challenged the Affordable Care Act contraceptive mandate as a violation of federal law because it forced them to violate their conscience. The Supreme Court ruled in their favor, stating that the government cannot force businesses to violate their faith through a requirement to provide abortive contraception.
After the decision was released, even Justice Kennedy noted: “Among the reasons the United States is so open, so tolerant, and so free is that no person may be restricted or demeaned by government in exercising his or her religion.”
However, under this new proposed legislation, a Christian pharmacist would either have to violate her conscience or be forced out of her profession. This bill is a clear violation of freedom of conscience and freedom of religion.
