A New Way to Save Asia Bibi

The dramatic situation of Asia Bibi (the Christian woman from Pakistan who was wrongly accused of blasphemy, sentenced to death, detained since 2010, and now awaiting a final judgment) may have arrived at a significant turning point.

Right now, there is a very good possibility that the European Parliament could officially call for Asia Bibi's release from prison, as well as for the respect of religious freedom in Pakistan, and elsewhere.

Mr Antonio Tajani, MEP, has issued a Written Declaration on the case of Asia Bibi. And, if an absolute majority of MEPs simply sign the Declaration, it will be an official invitation to the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Federica Mogherini, to engage on the case of Asia Bibi, and, in general, to consider the promotion of religious freedom measures.

Additionally, and in the same vein, it will invite the European Union to block, through diplomatic means and through clauses in agreements with other countries, the proliferation of so-called "anti-blasphemy laws", like the one which was used to sentence Asia Bibi.

The document, sponsored by MEPs from various political groups and countries, has already garnered numerous signatures. But, 25th August is the DEADLINE for collecting the signatures of an absolute majority of MEPs.

As described in our alert a few months ago, the situation for Christians in Pakistan has recently become more difficult. In fact, Asia Bibi has received new threats, and, unfortunately, even though an Appellate Court ruled that Asia Bibi should get a new trial, that trial date seems increasingly uncertain.

So, now is the time to act!

CitizenGO has put in a lot of effort, till now, to see that Asia Bibi is released (through the production of the film documentary "Freedom for Asia Bibi", by holding two international congresses "WeAreN2015/2016", by arranging the visit of the family of Asia Bibi with the Pope, as well as with countless email alerts and other initiatives), and, finally, we might be seeing some light at the end of the tunnel.

Therefore, we want to continue to do our part on this occasion -- which really represents a new way to save Asia Bibi.

Can you please help this effort for Asia Bibi? Can you please sign this petition? Thank you.

Freedom for Asia Bibi

For the Kind Attention of All Members of the European Parliament:

With this letter, I invite you to sign the Written Declaration, first signed by Mr Antonio Tajani (MEP), on the promotion of religious freedom in Pakistan and the condemnation of the unjustified detention of Asia Bibi.

The Declaration, which requires an absolute majority of MEP signatures, calls on the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs, Federica Mogherini, to work for the release of Asia Bibi and to consider the inclusion of a clause demanding respect for religious freedom in agreements between the EU and external countries.

As you know, religious tolerance in Pakistan has actually worsened in the last year. Therefore, I invite you to sign this Declaration, thus opening up a new way to save the life of Asia Bibi.

In order for this Declaration to be adopted, 50%+1 MEPs must sign before 25th August, 2016.

No vote will take place, so, it is essential to sign right now.

Thank you for your serious consideration.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]
