Petition: Protect Freedom of Education in Brazil
Brazil's highest court is about to determine whether homeschooling is permitted under their federal constitution. This ruling will have dramatic implications for parents who wish to freely direct the educational and moral instruction of their children.
The case began more than a year ago when a homeschooling family was charged with truancy. It has been working its way through the Brazilian legal system ever since. Because homeschooling is not explicitly recognized by Brazil’s federal education laws, this case is especially significant. But the Brazilian constitution acknowledges that parents bear a joint responsibility with the state for ensuring their children are educated.
This is an opportunity for Brazil to affirm the right of parents to direct their children's education, and to reject negative stereotypes about homeschooling. Research studies and decades of experience in the United States demonstrate how homeschooled students are well-integrated and productive members in society.
A decision could come at any time. And when it does, it will be very influential not only in Latin America but around the world. Please sign this petition to the Ministers of the Federal Court of Brazil, asking them to recognize homeschooling and to protect the right to freedom of education.
