Letter regarding Bill Clinton’s slanderous comment about Poland

“Poland and Hungary, two countries that would not be free but the United States and the long Cold War have decided this democracy is too much trouble, they want Putin like leadership. Just give me an authoritarian dictatorship and keep the foreigners out. Sound familiar?”

We oppose these slanderous words of former President Bill Clinton and potentially future First Gentleman of the United States.

Firstly, despite partially owing our freedom to the USA we primarily owe it to those who fought for the freedom of our country starting with the fight of the Cursed Soldiers and ending with members of the Solidarity movement. Had it not been for their fight and sacrifice for freedom and democracy we may well still be living under Communism. It was Poland with its rich history of liberty and tolerance that paved the way for the Eastern Bloc in ridding itself from Soviet occupation. We would also like to remind you that had it not been for the betrayal in Yalta, Poland would not have had to struggle with Communism for 45 years.

Secondly. Claiming that Poles desire „Putin like leadership” as well as „an authoritarian dictatorship” is slanderous and offensive as well as simply untrue. Poles chose in free and democratic elections first a President and later for the first time since 1989 a majority government. The fact that you may dislike or not approve of this government does not make authoritarian or dictatorial. There is opposition in Parliament and street protests are regularly organised without hindrance from the ruling party.

The public comparison of our flawed democracy (as classified by the Economist Intelligence Unit Democracy Unit) with Putin’s authoritarian Russia is both slanderous and untrue.
